The Forbidden Laugh

O.k. So it hit me again. The forbidden laugh hit me hard during worship at caregroup this week. I'll explain. Davy and I stopped by the church on our way to caregroup to pick up music for worship. Christmas music... Silent Night and Joy to the World. I asked him if he thought people would have a hard time worshipping in a caregroup setting to these songs. I know it shouldn't matter, but let's get real, some songs are distracting to sing in a small group. So I made a joke that David should 'slip in' a little rendition of Jingle Bells... and see if anyone raises there hands. That's pretty funny, right? Just close your eyes for a moment and imagine that... you'll laugh out loud.
Anyway, as soon as we hit the weak high note in Silent Night... I lost it. I'm standing in the front of the room, facing everyone, my dear husband is leading worship and I am bursting from within. I guess I could pass it off as 'holy' laughter, but our church isn't very used to that. Ummm, cry? It didn't work... I settled for my last resort... I bolted. I'm so sorry if anyone thought that I was laughing directly at them. That definitely was not the case.
Now, here's what I'm thinking. I think Jesus would've laughed. I know it can seem sacreligious, but I do think there is a fine line during worship. I've always been very sensitive to people making fun of others during worship. I've been 'made fun' of quite a bit for the whole dancing thing. I don't think that's o.k. In the Old Testemant, David's wife is struck with barrenness for mocking him as he worshipped openly. However, I am def. able to laugh at myself for alot of the things that happen during worship... We're human... things are funny!!! Old K.P.C. people remember the 'Pillow and the Crown' or the 'Lion of Judah' banner. These things are funny because most people would have no clue what was happenning if they weren't raised with those things. It's the same thing with worship at our church... funny things happen during worship... I think it's ok to laugh!

I think you could get a new list going entitled "What would Jesus laugh at?". I, for one, haven't spent much time considering what type of humor Jesus has but I'm sure that he has one, right?

Forbidden laugh- the best place not to have the forbidden laugh is at a Children's Hospital. I mean we're surrounded by sick children and some are seriously ill... but sometimes all that tension brings on the giggles. I'm the kind of girl that laughs at a funeral...can't understand what I mean, well you soon will... name that song.

Hey Jessica, GREAT post! I felt bad for you because I knew you were embarassed, but I didn't think that you did anything wrong. I like some of the comments you have recieved, like laughing during a funeral or a prayer. It's terrible but sometimes it just happens. I REALLY want to know what worship song that Ginger is referring to. Anyways, I guess what I'm tring to say is that I believe that God does has a sense of humor. Totally different topic, but I just posted some new pictures on my blog. Show Dave the picture of Billy if you want to make Billy blush! Love ya, Linda

Jess, Do you know the song I was talking about? Mike thought I was being bizarre and weird like I knew someone was going to die or something. I was referring to that weird song from the 90's or so.

Hugs to you friend.

O.K., now you can tell how bored I am. I did a little research about that song and it's called "One Week" by the Barenaked Ladies. You can find the song on youtube. How pitiful am I that I sit around obsessing over song lyrics???

Jessica...I've been "blurking" for awhile...anyhow. I thought of you and this post on Sunday as I turned around during worship to make sure something had gotten done in the lobby, only to see something VERY funny going on toward the back of the auditorium. The Forbidden Laugh struck and I was silently laughing so hard I was nearly crying. People probably thought that I was being very moved by the Christmas song we were singing or something...

David said you haven't been feeling well. Is there anything I can do to help? Maybe bring a meal over on Wed.? Let me know:)

Thanks for asking Mimi! I'm finally feeling better now. I've been fighting feeling a bit depressed lately so I tend to pull away from people (or my blog).
I have a chack for you! I haven't forgotten! I'll just drop it in the mail. I actually already have my meals planned out for this week (which is a miracle). Thanks for your offer, I will definitely take you up on it sometime!

Wendy! I miss you guys so much. I've been avoiding people lately... Sorry friend! Let's catch up this week. Love you!

Hi Jessica, Rachael and I were watching the new Pride and Prejudice Friday night, and I thought of you often since there are so many "forbidden laughs" in that movie...Mr. Collins eating dinner with the family for more than one. I think you and your sis, Rebekah, each have a gift for seeing things that are ordinary; but perceiving the funny or ridiculous and highlighting it for the rest of us. Keep up your blog. It helps the rest of us stay connected to you and makes some of us smile. I know your comments often do that for me. Miss you and Dave!
